Open space in and around the City of Santa Clarita provides habitat for several plants and animals which have been identified by State or Federal authorities as rare, threatened, or endangered. Destruction or loss of habitat is the single greatest threat to rare or uncommon species of plants and animals. With increased urbanization, human interaction and interference, some of these species are at an increased risk of disappearing from our landscape. These plants and animals are the gems of our open space system and we must all play an active role in ensuring their preservation. Some of these species are:
